Tangshan is a prefecture-level city within Hebei Province. It is well-known for the 1976 earthquake which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and killed over 250,000 people. Its administrative area has a total area of 17,040 square kilometers (6,579.2 square miles). The population of Tangshan is approximately eight million.
