The part of Hebei Province east of Beijing Municipality and through which the Great Wall is routed can be divided into two sections, Qinhuangdao in the east and Tangshan in the west. Both are very mountainous and provide a fabulous location for the Great Wall.

Qinhuangdao is a prefecture-level city within Hebei Province. Its administrative area has a total area of 7,812.4 square kilometers (3,016.4 square miles). Qinhuangdao's population is approximately three million.
