Pingyao City Walls

Pingyao is a walled city in central Shanxi Province built during the Ming Dynasty. The city wall is 6.1 kilometers (3.8 miles) around and 12 meters (40 feet) high and is surrounded by a moat. It has six barbican gates, a large tower at each corner, and 72 watchtowers. The wall is generally in excellent condition, although some major reconstruction was done on the southern wall in 2004.
